 This Tony Award nominated, hilarious musical adventure about following your dreams despite the limitations others set for you, is based on the 1980 cult classic film starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly.  

Greek muse, Kira, descends from Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first ROLLER DISCO! When Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds.

Actors receiving a call- back will receive specific scenes and music to prepare, and a specific set of times for which they are called.

Lines do not need to be memorized for the callback, but you should be familiar enough with the material to take redirection and “play” with the scenes.

November 2 – 4, 9 – 11, 16 – 17, 2023 at 8pm. 

Matinee performances are November 5, 12 and 18, 2023 at 2pm.

Additional performances may be added on November 4 (2pm), 8 (8pm), 11 (2pm) and/or 15 (8pm)

All cast members must be available for all performances, move in, sound rehearsal and dress rehearsals

 All performances will be held at Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Road (NE corner of Kingston and Markham) 

 Rehearsals begin in September and then continue:

Sundays 12:00 to 6:00 pm

Mondays  and Thursdays 7:00 to 10:30 pm

Additional or longer rehearsals will be held once the production has moved to the theatre. Rehearsals at the theatre are as follows (dates/times may be adjusted):

Sound Rehearsal: Wed. Oct. 25, 2023 6:00 – 10:30 pm

Technical Dress Rehearsal: Mon. Oct. 30, 2023 6:30 – 11:00 pm

Post Show Unit Clean Up: Sat. Nov. 25, 2023 10:00am – 4:00pm

A full rehearsal schedule will be given out the first week of rehearsals. 

 Please prepare one monologue and one musical selection.

• The monologue must be no longer than 90 seconds. Be prepared to receive one or two redirects on the material.
• A musical selection of your choice, no more than 32 bars. Xanadu is a classic pop show.  Consider singing a piece that resembles that style.

When you fill in your audition form online, you will be asked to provide a full list of conflicts. Be as complete as you can, especially around any holiday long weekends.  If there are changes in conflicts during the audition process, please inform the producer, or bring an updated conflict list to the audition and/or call backs.

The call-backs and rehearsal schedule will take into consideration the conflicts identified at time of audition. Adding more conflicts after casting may result in removal from the show.

There will be a group dance call at the auditions. Each role is looking for different movement abilities so all levels are welcome.

Also, there is roller skating in the show.  If you can roller skate, we encourage you to bring your roller skates to the audition so we can see you move a bit in them (any tricks, stability, etc). If you don’t roller skate, that’s ok too, but some roles do require it (Kira, Sonny) so we hope you will be willing to learn how to roller skate.

Individuals called back will be given a schedule specific to the characters for which they are being considered; this schedule will be communicated to each performer via email. People auditioning should inform the producers, at the time of their first audition, if there is any time on the callback days during which they are unavailable.

Please note – though we will try, we may not be able to accommodate all conflicts for call-backs.

If called back for a role (or roles), actors will be asked to prepare specific scenes and musical selections from the show. These will be sent along with callback notifications and will be available for preview online ahead of time.

Please note that age ranges given in the descriptions indicate perceived appearance on stage as opposed to the actor’s chronological age. These are just guidelines. All roles are open to consideration regardless of background, ethnicity or sexual/gender orientation.

Kira (Clio) C, D, E, K, R

The youngest of Zeus’s daughters and the muses. Falls in love with Sonny. Pretty. Adventurous. Honest and determined. Muse of history and the leader of the muses.

Sonny Malone C, D, E, K, R

A self-critical and depressed, mortal, chalk artist who falls in love with Kira. Handsome, but not particularly smart. He embodies 1980s pop culture and is very much a California dreamer.

Danny Maguire (Zeus) C, D, R (tbd)

The hard-nosed “all work and no play” businessman who owns the theatre he once built for his love, Kira. Used to be a budding artist like Sonny, but has since let money and greed consume him.

Calliope (Aphrodite) S

Kira’s older sister and fellow muse. She is jealous of Kira and as Melpomene’s sidekick, plots with her for Kira’s downfall. The Muse of epics.

Melpomene (Medusa) S

Kira’s oldest sister. Mother of the Sirens. She is jealous that Kira is the leader of the muses rather than herself, and therefore creates the plot for her downfall. Muse of tragedy.

Thalia S

One of Kira’s older sisters and fellow muse. Muse of comedy. Actor doubles include: Siren, Young Danny, Tubes Singer, and Cyclops.

One of Kira’s older sisters and fellow muse. Muse of lyrics and erotica. As Eros, she is responsible for shooting Kira with the arrow of love brought on by Melpomene and Calliope’s spell. Actor doubles include: Siren, Andrews Sister, Eros, and Hera.

Terpsicore S

One of Kira’s older sisters and fellow muse. Muse of dance. As Hermes, the messenger of the gods, he is deeply masculine in voice but sassy and flippant in attitude. Actor doubles include: Siren, Tubes Singer, Hermes, and Centaur.
